All this talk about nickel prices made our ears perk up because it’s 26% of stainless steel, making it one of the best alloys. Yes, nickel was used way more in construction in the 1920s and 30s with an alloy called monel. After the second world war, things changed, stainless steel and aluminum surpassed monel (that used 66% nickel) making them the most cost effective, popular choice. What is it about this metal that makes it so popular? Well, stainless steel is stainless in large part due to nickel’s non-corrosive properties, heat resistance, durability and strength. It is also becoming more widely used in construction with green initiatives because it can be made from about 90% recycled materials.
