Can electric heat be as inexpensive as natural gas?

Is electric heat as expensive to heat a home as you think? Lots of people assume that electric heat is going to be the most expensive but looking at passive homes, heat pumps, and baseboard heaters, electric heat can be as inexpensive or even less expensive than a gas furnace. In a passive home or a small apartment, baseboard heat is the best option due to the space being efficient enough in a passive home and small enough in an apartment. In homes that don’t fit those criteria, using a heat pump can be as inexpensive as a gas furnace, not to mention that some heat pumps can be used to cool in those hotter months! How is this possible? Well, an electric air-blown heat pump is more energy efficient even compared to the lower cost per energy unit with gas.
